Emergency Survival Kits Can Save Your Life

By Maryanne Goff

Being prepared for the unexpected, is something that many people are taught from the time that they can walk. Nothing in life, is ever predictable. One minute the sun may be out, and shining bright, while the next minute a storm might be brewing. It is the surprises in life that keep individuals intrigued. To ensure you are prepared for whatever surprises may come your way, it is important to consider having a few emergency survival kits on hand.

It is surprising in this day and age, when the weather behaves in an unpredictable manner, that everyone does not make it a point to own a kit that is packed with a few necessary items. When people expected the world to end in 2012, there were tons of people scouring to put a kit together that would help ensure their families safety. However, when the world did not end, people stopped planning for the worst, and started living in the moment.

Although there is nothing wrong with living in the moment, if you fail to plan you do plan to fail. The kits do serve a purpose, and they should not be neglected, and not used. There are two places that you should always have a kit in. These two places are inside of your residence, and inside of your vehicle.

The size of a kit can vary. There are some that may be small enough to tuck into your pocket. For example, a small kit may contain a flashlight, a multi-functional tool, compass, lighter, and a whistle. You can carry these modest items around in your jacket pockets at all times. This way, if you do need any of the items, they will be at arms reach.

The larger style versions, are normally carried, either in a backpack or a shoulder sack of some kind. These larger style versions will contain a few additional items in them. Typically, the larger style versions will have some water, food, matches, and batteries in them. First aid kits, should also be backed in the larger version kit also, just in case.

Traveling kits differ from home kits. With the travel style kit, everything you need will need to be able to fit into a backpack. However, the home kits, do not have to be confined to a small space. Therefore, you can pack any necessary items that you need inside of your home kit.

The basic rule of thumb to follow, when it comes to having a kit within your residence, is it should last for the span of three days, at least. Typically, if there is a disaster that occurs, having a kit that has enough food, water, and other items to last three days will suffice. If you are evacuated from your residence, you should take your kit with you.

A lot of modern day adults that reside in large cities do not feel that owning emergency survival kits are important. However, if something adverse were to happen, you would kick yourself, knowing that you could have prepared yourself for what was to come, if you had packed a kit, prior to the event happening. Life is unpredictable, preparing yourself for it, is key to survival.
