Antarctica On The Cheap!

By Jonny Blair

This post has been a while in coming believe me and I'm about to reveal the cheapest way for a traveller or a backpacker to get to Antarctica without working on a ship or working in Antarctica. This is how to book a cheap trip to Antarctica as a traveller and backpacker. You can do it, and you SHOULD do it. Antarctica is the best place I have been so far. []

You may have read my story of how I lived in a tent in the mountains of Poatina in Tasmania, working 7 days a week and 10 - 12 hour days on farms just to afford my trip to the white continent. Well I lived my dreams and did it. Yes I landed in Antarctica and completed my quest to visit all seven continents. But I didn't actually do it the cheapest way possible! I booked my place in a cabin on the boat months in advance. I booked it in Melbourne, Australia in April 2010 and ended up going in November 2010. I needed something big to look forward too and I was chuffed when I had it booked and just worked and counted down the days until my adventure. I paid around $5,000 Australian Dollars at the time, BUT that's NOT how to book a cheap trip to Antarctica...read on...

What's the tip for a cheap trip to Antarctica?

This tip applies to travellers, nomads, backpackers and even holiday makers. It's not for scientists and barmen - we know you can work on a boat and get a free trip to Antarctica but you're working. Here's the cheap way to see it as a traveller.

My advice - do NOT book anything in advance!

Yes if you want to get a really cheap deal to visit Antarctica you need to book it last minute. It's obvious that travel companies will sell all the rooms and bed for much more at the start so they can get the money in. Then at the end they are just trying to fill the empty beds. If you do book in advance I'd say the bare minimum you could possibly get it for is around $4,000. But hold on - if you want to get it cheaper don't book anything in advance. That's step number one.

The guide to booking a cheap Antarctica trip

OK now the nest step is easy - head to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego in October. It's on the south tip of Argentina and all the Antarctica trips leave from there. Spend a few days in the city itself - it's a great city to travel round. Keep your eyes open for special offers from the many travel agents on the main street. Then pop in and book your cheap trip to Antarctica! You could be leaving the very next day and for very cheap!

So the really good news is if you book a last minute deal to Antarctica in the city of Ushuaia you will get ir really cheap - as cheap as $3,000 US if you're lucky! An amazing deal that's a saving of around $2,000 US Dollars.

Here's why it's so cheap:

The majority of boats heading to Antarctica have empty beds and room - they haven't been filled. But the companies want the money for those empty beds and rooms so they reduce the price in a vain attempt to get some more money at the last minute. This is where you are in luck as you book your cheap trip to the cold continent!

So head to Ushuaia on the island of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and book your trip to Antarctica for the very next day! Or if that boat really is full, you'll only have to wait a few days. There is always space for more. Antarctica only attracts 30,000 tourists a year (the rest of the visitors are scientists or working there or on boats). It's not high on most people's list and it's not cheap but treat yourself to it and you'll love it! I paid $5,000 US Dollars (also a special offer at the time) and it was worth every penny or cent. Imagine if you get it for $3,000 US! You will have the time of your life.

So there you have it - get it booked in Ushuaia and head on your way to the world's most incredible place. I cannot recommend it enough and I know this is a very useful travel tip. Off you go and enjoy the white land.

You must make sure you take the correct warm clothes and supplies with you on this epic trip. You're going to be able to say you have stepped into Antarctica. It is a sensational place. Happy travelling!
