Using Airport Lost And Found

By Amanda Baird

There are lots of things to think about when getting on a flight. You want to make sure you have your passport, ticket and so forth. Naturally you want to physically get your seat in time for take off and sometimes this means you can miss something while rushing. This can result in losing items along the way and this is when you may need the services of the airport lost and found.

While nobody wants to lose their valuable it helps to be prepared. Have some kind of identifying mark on anything valuable that you do not want to lose. For example a serial number or identity mark is a good way of making something easier to find. It also means you have something that specifically identifies the item as something you own.

Admittedly this is not always practical and sometimes it may not be possible to secure mark all your items. Therefore it is worth looking at what you pack and bring with you to the airport so that in the event that if you have to tell somebody what an item looks like you can remember. Speaking vaguely about what an item looks like then it is less likely that they will be able to find it.

Once you are there be sure to give a detailed description of the missing item. It helps if it has a specific code or some kind of feature that marks it out. While some people can be hesitant to put labels on with contact details for fear of thieves using the information to break into their property it also increases the chances of getting an item back.

Another thing to be aware of is when the desk is open. The opening hours will vary according to the airport. Therefore it is best to look at the website before you travel so that you know the operating times. It can be frustrating as you can end up being unable to find items and get help retrieving them.

The procedure will vary according to the airport with some items reported missing within 24 to 48 hours of being given in to the airport. Some companies will simply have someone at a desk responding to various enquiries. In other cases it may be more elaborate and you may be given a tracking number. Remember to keep a record of this as this will make it easier when making follow up enquiries or if you get transferred to another operative.

The way in which a lost property desk will vary according to the airport. Some will simply note down a missing item. Others may give you a tracking number to note down. In either case it is important to listen and to follow any instructions you are given. While it can be difficult during a stressful time you need to remember what they tell you and to note it down.

In short when using airport lost and found you need to be sensible. It can be difficult when you have lost something, especially if it has sentimental value and is not easily replaced. However if you prepare in the right way then you can give yourself the best chance of getting your items back.
